Top Comics – Previous Month

Today, Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. announced the comic book and graphic novel sales figures for the month of June.

Before we get to the nitty-gritty of which title got top spot or which company won or lost, let’s first start with the news that all comic fans need to hear.  Overall the comic book market had a very good showing last month.

PREVIEWSworld had this to say:

June saw a split decision in market share, with Marvel Comics edging DC Entertainment for the top publisher in Retail Dollars 33.77% to 33.03%, while DC Entertainment edged Marvel Comics on Unit Share 38.23% to 37.82%.

And The Comic Chronicles reported:

Retailers are estimated to have ordered $40.5 million in comic books and trade paperbacks from Diamond in the month, a sum that brings the second quarter orders to more than $20 million higher than the same three-month period last year.

To sum up , based on initial estimates the comic book industry is doing just fine, as Marvel and DC continued to battle each other for the top spot in the retail market.

Overall Marvel barely won the month taking in 33.77% of June’s comic revenues, while DC brought in 33.03%.  Image Comics (7.36%) led the pack of the independent publishers, followed by IDW Publishing (6.22%), Dark Horse Comics (4.51%), Dynamite Entertainment (2.82%), Boom! Studios (1.25%) and assorted companies (11.04%), totaling about 33.2% of the comic sales in June.  DC had the highest volume of comics on the market, taking in 38.23%  followed closely by Marvel‘s 37.82%.
