It’s hard to picture Debris ending next issue, it’s coming to a close too soon. This really could have been stretched into a 13 issue series. When you don’t want a mini-series to end, you know you have a true winner. The main praising aspect of it is Maya, the main character. A tough and nice female character that takes down monsters? Lots of win right there. Then we have a simple but engaging story of her seeking ‘Athabasca.’ It’s a simple and plain story, nothing complex, it just has the main character on a journey. If you think that’s boring, you obviously haven’t been reading Debris. The latest issue moves the story along with some interesting plot developments.
Here’s the official description from Image:
Maya and Kessel leave the world of ruin behind to discover a whole landscape of pure nature. The legend of Athabasca is true, but there is formidable opposition blocking their way and it becomes very clear: they are not alone.
What I like about Debris is that there’s no exploitation. We have Maya and Kessal continuing the journey and along the way battling the occasional Umbra. It’s easy to follow along and just fun. In the opening page we have a big Umbra tearing apart another one. It’s interesting how even though these things roam the earth and are the same species, they still hunt each other down. An amalgam to when dinosaurs roamed around? Maybe. This may sound strange, but the dialogue is both complex and simple. It’s complex in that it explains the situation and what’s happening well, but done in a way where you don’t have to fully concentrate as if this were Inception.
Riley Rossmo’s art is like the story, simple. It doesn’t try to draw attention to itself with fancy explosions and supremely detailed characters and environments, it doesn’t need any of that. Some series need fantastic art to cover up sub par dialogue, (looking at Justice League) but Debris works fine without it. That’s not to say there isn’t any detail, the Umbra looked fantastic. And once again, another incredible cover. This mini-series has some of the best covers I’ve seen in awhile.
Overall, another great issue of Debris. Maya continues to be one of the best female main characters currently in comics. Not to mention the cool Umbra monsters and interesting ending. I’m sad to see it go next issue, it’s been a fun ride.
