Danger Girl: Trinity #3 Review

For a title that originally presented itself as a spy-thriller infused with campy sexual innuendo, the last two issues of Danger Girl: Trinity have actually been the opposite. It’s been mostly sexual innuendo, with just a touch spy. And not much thriller. But in issue #3 a story is finally starting to take shape. But with this run nearing a close is it too little too late?

Here’s the official description from IDW:

It’s three times the ACTION, three times the THRILLS, and three times the DANGER!!!  Abbey, Sydney and Sonya embark on three different knuckle-clenching adventures, each an epic tale of intrigue and derring-do, and each drawn by a different fantastic artist — ”It’s a triple-play of danger that will climax with the biggest surprise of the year!

As I’ve shared, the concept behind this Danger Girl reboot is great. And in fact, it might be the most enjoyable part.  Penned by Danger Girl co-creator Andy Hartnell, each issue of the Trinity series follows three signature DG characters (Sonya, Sydney and Abbey) as they navigate three missions.  And each Danger Girl gets her own illustrator to boot: Sonya is illustrated by Stephen Molnar; Harvey Tolibao tackles Sydney; and Abbey Chase gets drawn by John Royale.  As as we enter issue #3, these missions are finally beginning to intersect and we get something that we haven’t gotten in a while: clever dialogue, compelling dangers, and ballsy heroines.

It took Andy Hartnell a while to get here. Prior to this, the girls felt like meat puppets. Sure, they were blowing shit up and shooting guns, but there was no mystery or cleverness to their adventure. They didn’t demonstrate brains. Rather, we had a seemingly endless parade of crotch, butt, and boob shots and too little thrill. Issue #3 feels like a better balance, and it’s fun to see the girls start to solve a mystery.

This issue has some very good artists. Stephen Molnar, Harvey Tolibao and John Royale are all masters with a special knack for action shots. Although Stephen Molnar is probably the worst offender when it comes to putting his female characters into sexually suggestive poses, his art is the most visually compelling.  He has an eye for action and is adept at facial expression.

Danger Girl: Trinity #3 delivers a little more of what it always promised. We still got sexy spies, but at least now they’re smart ones, too.
