This psychedelic trip through the past and potential future of a relationship continues, but is it really a story worth sharing? Read on to find out.
The official description from Dark Horse:
While recovering from their most traumatic personal challenge to date, Conan and Bêlit seek respite in a mystical journey of the mind. Instead, they uncover the dark truths that they’ve hidden from themselves and each other.
Curious onlookers be warned: if you take a journey like this with your girlfriend the chances that you’ll discover some uncomfortable truths about your significant other are quite high. As we enter the second part of this complex story arc our protagonist and his lover come face to face with their dark sides and a future that might just bind them beyond this brief time in their lives.
The beauty of the script by Brian Wood can be boiled down to one simple word: balance. The author handily takes our lead characters down this crazy and somewhat convoluted journey but manages to keep the path quite clear. Both the barbarian and his pirate queen get to see each other in their truest forms. I was particularly impressed with last six or so pages because despite jumping from revelation to questions of redemption in the eyes of a potential family, the pace and the soul of the piece remained strong and intact. In short: I absolutely enjoyed this tale and this three part yarn is deserving of praise.
Davide Gianfelice once again handles the art and I have to say I find myself more and more impressed as I dissect this visual journey. The panels are simplistic in nature as a certain amount of minimalist tendencies are employed to the narrative landscape, but thanks to the talent’s unique sensibilities nothing ever appears to be under-realized. When audience members reach the more emotional sequences they’ll discover how nuanced his approach can be as his stylistic renditions find a way to live a life all their own.
Conan the Barbarian #17 is yet another excellent entry in a series that deserves to be purchased. Highly recommended.
