Bionic Man Vs. Bionic Woman #4

With one more issue to go, Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #4 has a lot to live up to. The name alone sounds epic, but the action so far hasn’t met this promise. That said, the plot has potential and it focuses on two very likeable characters, so how badly can it go wrong?

The official description from Dynamite:

The iconic heroes of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and THE BIONIC WOMAN, together again… and at each other’s throats! Torn to pieces (in both the literal and figurative sense), can Steve Austin somehow regroup, locate, and save the rogue Jamie Sommers… without killing her?

First off, honestly, let’s forget this series is entitled Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman. The only fighting occurred, very briefly, in the last issue. The front covers for these issues have only lead to disappointment in the pages. Here, we’re treated to more of the same. Sommers character offers little new; there’s some witty dialogue, then she escapes. As for Austin, he at least gets more attention, since its not often we see most of his limbs ripped off and left for dead.

A lot of this, arguably, has to be down to the writing. Whilst Keith Champagne certainly understands the characters of Austin and Sommers, the lack of a daring plot makes this issue very lackluster. An all out fight would of at least been interesting. Whilst the tension between the two, mostly due to Sommers character and lack of memories, is always interesting, its nothing that hasn’t been seen in Bionic Man and Bionic Woman anyway.

As for the visuals, Jose Luis’s visuals offer the usual standard of the series. The writing may drop, but the art quality is its usual standard. Some might not like the slightly sketchy pencils but, combined with the colors from Inlight Studio, they at least give something nice to look at.

Over all, this issue can be seen as a disappointment. This isn’t even to mention that the last part of this issue more or less wraps up the main story. So much so that the next issue is arguably a predictable wrapping up and epilogue. Yet its set before the current title’s, so readers already know how things between the characters end up. All in all, its definitely lacking something.
