Bedlam #5 Review

Previously in Bedlam:

  • Fillmore Press (formerly known as the serial murderer “Madder Red”) has begun to aid the police in catching a serial killer in Bedlam
  • The case turns on it’s head when it it revealed that the killer is related to a church scandal that happened a few years ago in the town.
  • Fillmore & Detective Acevado move to solve the case before the next target ends up dead

Here is the summary from Image:

“A great weeping.”
Fillmore and Acevado goe to investigate an emergency call that is connected to one of the witnesses in the “Archbishop Warton” trial. They find numerous chemicals & poisons, along with two unconscious residents. Acevado questions why the two weren’t killed, Fillmore reasons that the killer wasn’t “commanded” to, which allows Acevado to come to the conclusion that the killer is receiving instructions from Warton. The two go to the prison to interrogate him…but not all is as it seems when they arrive there.
Nick Spencer’s script is dripping with mystery on every page. The case with the mysterious winged killer is heating up and we also learn more of Fillmore’s bloody past as Madder Red. The issue takes a couple of pages that detail his last days in the “hospital” he was sent to for 10 years. These pages don’t make too much sense at first, since they are randomly placed; but at the end of the issue they all come together in a surprising way.
Riley Rossmo’s art continues to impress. So there really is no complaints in that avenue since it is another strong element in the book. He draws tense scenes very well and finds a way to suck you in, especially when it flashbacks to Fillmore’s past as Red. The colors are more diverse this time around which is a welcome change to the mostly red, gray, white palette the 1st couple of issues had.

Bedlam is still an excellent series, filled with mystery and intrigue. It will be interesting to see how Fillmore Press will continue to adjust to normal life; and more importantly, if anyone will find out about his dark past.
