Avenging Spider-Man #9 Review

Avenging Spider-Man has a very special guest this month, but should you even care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

Spider-Man plummets into action with the all-new Captain Marvel! Is the World’s Greatest Super Hero ready for a ride with Earth’s Mightiest Hero?

Welcome to Captain Mar… I mean the review for the latest issue of Avenging Spider-Man.  See what I did there, I pointed out the biggest elephant in the room regarding this fine comic book.  The title character of this series may be Spider-Man but this latest outing is mostly about the introduction of the all new Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers.  But don’t worry Spider-fans there’s plenty of love for everyone’s favorite wall-crawler in this latest release.

The first part of this two-part story arc is engaging and very solid.  Kelly Sue DeConnick does a really good job nailing the dynamic dialogue between Spider-Man and the former Ms. Marvel.  Their friendship and heartfelt back and forth banter sell this whimsical little tale on a level that will please longtime fans of either character.  My only gripe is that for the most part the narrative stays in fairly safe territory, not attempting to expand or challenge the friendship on display here.

Terry Dodson did a very good job with the art in this issue.  The style spoke to the narrative in a way that should make any fan comfortable with this engaging read.  That being said there were times when the character’s faces were a bit overly wonky, but when the action starts it doesn’t mater.  All the pieces fall into place yielding a very good looking comic book.

This may not be the best Avenging Spider-Man issue and it may not inform or expand these two characters in any way, but it does succeeds in delivering a fun story that might just be worth your $3.99.  Recommended.
