Amazing Spider-Man #697 Review

The final issue of this Hobgoblin free-for-all is here, but does this bombastic saga end on a high note?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

DANGER ZONE PART 3

• Spider-Man joins the War of the Goblins!

• Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin, has returned—will any other Goblins show?

• And the pieces of the puzzle are almost complete for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700…

It’s a bittersweet release that’s full of action as the final pieces leading into the forthcoming arc fall into place.  Yes there are plenty of Goblins within these pages, supporting cast members get some much needed screen time and our hero gets a chance to prove how awesome he can be.  In short, the creative team delivers a rousing conclusion to this three part tale while packing in a few ominous undertones.

Dan Slott and Christos Gage are the captains of this proverbial ship as they steadily move each piece on their Marvel Universe board toward whatever endgame is coming.  We have Goblins fighting in the air, Spider-Man trying to fight against himself and them while a super scientist is caught in the crossfire.  To sum it up, the script is absolutely entertaining as both of these excellent authors pen what could very well be the last normal romp with this rendition of everyone’s favorite wall-crawling menace.

Giuseppe Camuncolli delivers some of his best stuff in this action packed outing.  His character work on both Peter Parker and his supporting cast exude the soul of the script while elevating the overall quality of the piece.  His pencil strokes never look out of place, especially when he draws a couple key scenes that seem destined to have some sort of ripple effect with regard to the upcoming arc that’s destined to end this storied comic book series.

Amazing Spider-Man #697 is an excellent finish to this outstanding jaunt, but it’s the ominous plot threads for #698 that will have fans gleefully talking and speculating.  Recommended.
