3 Easter Eggs From Dr. Manhattan #2

If you’ve been reading the Before Watchmen books from DC, you probably know they’re full of references to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s original Watchmen series.

Last week’s Before Watchmen release, Dr. Manhattan #2, by J. Michael Straczynski and Adam Hughes, had even more easter eggs than usual, unrelated to the parent title. Check ’em out:

1. Martian Manhunter is the hero of Thrilling Space Mysteries– On page 8, a boy shows Jon a comic book, Thrilling Space Mysteries (the cover of which is also the cover of this issue), saying, “This blue man, he and his people used to live on Mars. But then they all died and he’s the only one left.”  While Dr. Manhattan is blue, and eventually goes to Mars, this actually describes the life of DCU character Martian Manhunter before arriving on Earth.

2. “The Washington Post” has some off-color remarks about the Cuban Missile Crisis- Pages 9 and 10 feature different versions of the “The Washington Post”. While most of the tiny text on the page is either illegible or about President Kennedy, the second line of the picture caption is a joke: “Dr. Manhattan gets laid a lot, but he always has blue balls.”

3. Jon gets married at the Overlook Hotel- At least, that’s where they hold the reception. While there are no signs specifying that Jon’s wedding reception is indeed in the haunted hotel from “The Shining”, the carpet, first seen on page 6, exactly matches the iconic carpeting from the Stanley Kubrick film based on Stephen King‘s novel:

What do you think? Have you found any more fun easter eggs in the Before Watchmen books? Keep an eye out in future releases and let us know in the comments!
