2000AD #1869 Review

2000-AD-LOGO3.jpgWhat week would be complete without 2000AD? This week it’s 2000AD #1869 and we have Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors, Grey Area, Ulysses Sweet, Maniac for Hire and Strontium Dog.

First up, as always, is Judge Dredd and the conclusion to Rob William’s thrilling Titan arc. This has been an action packed story and William’s doesn’t pull out here, offering a very suspenseful conclusion. This is one of the best Judge Dredd arc’s seen in a long time. Likewise, the gritty 2000ad-1869visual treatment from Henry Flint helped seal the deal.

Second, we have more ABC Warriors. This follows on from last week – which felt more like a one-shot – but the conclusion is satisfying enough. As character development, Pat Mill’s story ties into the longer running arc. Fans of the series will see the clear foreshadowing, but it is nonetheless an exciting issue. Clint Langley’s artwork helps depict this beautifully ugly world in striking black and white.

Next is a new Grey Area arc. Dan Abnett offers an interesting idea, but this first part only serves to set up the premise. It is exciting and thrilling, with great artwork from Patrick Goddard, but it’s not the best Grey Area has to offer. As an opening premise, however, it serves its role well.

This is followed by the conclusion to Ulysses Sweet, Maniac for Hire. Guy Adam’s offers a satisfying end to his exploration of the weird, wacky and wonderful. Of course, this means plenty of hilarious violence and bizarre characters. This is made all the more amusing by Paul Marshall’s art, displaying an excellent talent for facial expressions.

Finally, we have more Strontium Dog. John Wagner offers something dramatic this week and there is a strong sense of things coming to an end. Given the length of the arc, this makes for a refreshing script which reinvigorates interest into the title – just what it needed.
